Nuansa is a new boutique spa on Fifth Avenue between 48th and 49th street on the east side of the avenue. It is on the fifth floor of one of those small nondescript buildings that always seem to have a sign heralding a sale. The elevator opens right into the spa and then you are no longer in New York City but in a tiny jewel box that is as close to Thailand as you can get without the long flight. This was a place of calm and healing; definitely not your bachelorette party spa.
In moments, I met the lovely Naru who brought me to my massage room and her healing hands went to work. It was heavenly to leave sciatica pain I was in, behind and I have been back several times to make sure that I am getting out a winter’s worth of knots. Every experience has been perfect and I am not a pushover massage patron. My standards are very high – clean and serene space: check! (Actually I am not sure there is a cleaner place in all of New York); artistic, sensual atmosphere: check! Specialized focus of massage – check! Quiet, comforting lounge: check! Water with fruit and plain, snacks of dried fruit and nuts, and especially dear to me, of course, warm green tea brewed just for you. As if that weren’t enough, Nuansa’s business partner is a charming Swiss gentleman who places a covered glass bowl of the most melt-in -your-mouth chocolate truffles on said silver pod just in case you require some pleasure to chase away any residual pain.
The best massage I have ever had was at the spa of the Mandarin Oriental in Bangkok. I find Thai women to be extraordinary people – strong, smart, tender and caring with a true dedication to healing. So if you hurt, or don’t want to hurt, or just want to feel good, experience this special little place and Thailand and the perfect massage will not be far away, I promise.
